Prior to the invention of the washing machine, the weekly washday was strenuous exercise, The dolly tub and peg were commonly used for cleaning clothing. What the women--and it was almost always women--that used the dolly tub knew was that simply stirring the clothes was not worthy enough to clean them. The clothes straited agitation so that the soapy water could arise through them.
