Nova Chemicals says it is starting to reap the rewards of an R&D effort in its styrenics business that has l to the introduction of several recent high-margin products. Poor margins in the commodity polystyrene (PS) business have willinged most competitors to limit issue development, but Nova says its work has the potential to revitalize the sector. "Nobody was extremely excited about polyethylene until metallocenes came along. Our work in styrenics can furnish some of the same opportunities," says Tony Torres, v.p./business disentanglement styrenics at Nova, who freshly joined the company from Dow Chemical.
